Safety Starts With You

When transiting the roadways, in a personal vehicle or a commercial vehicle, your safety and the safety of those around you is in your hands. Everything that you're doing while operating a vehicle has counter effects to your lane position, your speed, and your awareness of others on the road.

Every additional factor you introduce while operating a vehicle, potentially puts you at risk. Which is why it is extremely important to control every aspect you can while operating a vehicle, even when it comes down to the amount of sleep you get or the coffee you drink.

Going long periods of time without rest causes your senses to be delayed, depending on the length of time the delay in your senses is comparable to being intoxicated. Some over the counter medicine, such as cold medicine, also can have the same effect on your ability to react to scenarios while operating a vehicle. Thirteen percent of drivers of commercial motor vehicles said they were fatigued at the time of their crash. The fatigue not only comes from lack of sleep, but can be caused by long working hours or even unhealthy lifestyles. Eating balanced, healthy meals throughout the day and trying to stay active can impact your alertness while driving and potentially save you from a crash.

Consuming excessive amounts of caffeine can also severely impact your ability to react to scenarios and anticipate the actions of others on the road. In extreme cases, drivers have been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) because of the excessive amounts of caffeine causing their behaviour to be erratic.

While operating a commercial vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of you and those around you. Even when operating your personal vehicle, you should take your safety and the safety of those around you with the utmost seriousness and operate your vehicle with as much precaution as possible.
